Cowon A3 Reviewed Say what you will about the Cowon A3 looking almost exactly like its predecessor, the Cowon A2. The fact is the changes are all inside; all for the better. Be it the expanded file format support, a higher resolution LCD screen (double the resolution of the A2), ability to play 720p HD content, it is almost impossible to find another player of this caliber.

So it doesn't have WiFi and Bluetooth like the other guys. That still shouldn't stop you from considering the this media power house. Read on to find out why the Cowon A3 should be your next purchase if you are on the market for a well-rounded PMP to play all your media files.

Cowon A3 Unboxed

It's here and it's spectacular! It's here and it's spectacular! As usual, the unboxed photos come first. The review should be done by Friday.

My initial impression of the A3 is very positive. The 4" LCD is sharp (though it is not touch screen), and the size and weight are just right. Some people might be put off that it looks just like the A2, just with a different casing color. However, I really do like this new color though. The menu has been refined; it looks sharper and not as cartoonish as the A2's one. I also like being able to bring up the menu and have the video file still playing in the background. Overall, a nice upgrade to the A2.

Cowon Q5W Reviewed The Cowon Q5W is here at last: almost a year after its debut at CES '07 back in January. The product has been available in Korea since May under the Q5 name. Though the company was rumored to be releasing the product in the US in the 2nd quarter of this year, it didn't show up until the end of November.

With its sexy form factor, an enormous 5” touch screen LCD, wireless support for both WiFi and bluetooth, a 40/60GB hard disk storage, and a long list of support for video/audio formats and codecs, it is hard to resist the lure of the Q5W. Oh, and not to mention its optional GPS support coming in a few weeks. The only thing that might take attention away from this player might be the reigning “king” of the PMP market called the Archos 605 WiFi. There is little doubt that Cowon is positioning this player to take down the reign of 605.

Can the Q5W snatch the crown away from Archos 605 WiFi? Read on.

Cowon Q5W Unboxed

Cowon Q5W Unboxing Pictures Thanks, Mr. UPS Guy. The Q5W arrived at the office this morning. We got down to business and took some unboxing photos as soon as we got our hands on it. The box itself is much bigger than we thought; its width and height are about those of a legal-size paper.

Our first impression of the Q5W is good for the most part. The metal-bodied hardware feels really solid; a little bit on the heavy side. The LCD takes up the whole of the front, which is nice. The touch-screen LCD is bright and sharp at 800x460. The interface is where we have some concerns with. Since the Q5W runs on WindowsCE 5.0, the Cowon interface actually runs on top of it. A lot of the functions fall back to using the default WindowsCE native interface, which is not exactly user-friendly. Another big down side is that it was not able to locate our WiFi signal even when we placed the unit right next to the access point.

We'll be taking the Q5W through its paces in the next few days. We will let you know how it performs. As promised, we will also be comparing to its direct competitor, the Archos 605 WiFi.

For now, enjoy the unboxing pictures.

Update: The more I tested the Q5W we received, the more I am convinced that we have a faulty unit. Here are just a few things that I am having problem with:

  • WiFi reception - the unit is unable to detect the WiFi signal in our office
  • keyboard activation - the on-screen keyboard doesn't always come up when I place the cursor on an edit box; this makes it impossible to input any kind of useful information. This is worse when I open up Microsoft Word CE and have no way to "type"
  • USB host - when connecting a camera to the review unit, I am unable to browse through the photos on the camera using the file browser
  • FM reception - I am unable to receive signals from any station around my area
  • and the 5-page quick guide filled with misspelled words and one upside down image really doesn't help at all. By the way, there is NO detailed manual for the unit, only that 5-page quick guide.
I will contact Cowon to have the unit replaced on Monday. This means that I will not have the review ready by then. I apologize for this.

New Aluminum iMac Unboxed and Compared

Finally got it. I was waiting at the Apple Store at South Coast Plaza for 2 - 3 hours before the Apple employees brought it out for me. It was worth the wait though.

I rushed back to the office and took some photos of the new iMac and then did a side by side comparison between my white 24" iMac. It's definitely thinner. Looks sturdier. But the keyboard. I don't know. I am typing on it right now to blog this post but I have a lot of getting used to.

Enjoy the pictures. Be back in a few days with the review. We'll see if I get used to the keyboard by then. For now, I'm not liking the feel at all.

Update: By request, I added photos of the RAM "drawer", located at the bottom of the screen. There are two slots for RAM sticks. Once is currently occupied. There are also foldable tabs used to pull out the RAM sticks.

cowon_iaudio_7.png Mr. UPS just came by. I unboxed it and took some photos. The review is coming in a few days. In the mean time, just enjoy the photos.

It looks almost like its predecessor, the iAudio 6. The big selling point for the updated version is the 60-hour battery life, in which we'll definitely be testing.

Just wait a few more days.

Monster iFreePlay

monster_shuffle_headphones.png It's a strange concept: docking the iPod right on the headphones. Before the release of the 2nd gen iPod Shuffle, nobody would have thought of such a thing.

When Monster Cable released the iFreePlay Cordless HeadPhones, many hoped that this would be the solution they needed to finally get rid of the cords.

I took the test headphones out for some exhaustive tests: running, jogging, casual listening, etc. In the end, I had some mixed feelings about them. Read on.

DLO TransDock Deluxe

transdock_upcoming_review.png So your car doesn't come with one of those fancy-schmancy iPod connectors that integrates nicely into your car stereo system. You also tried out all the FM transmitters for the iPod that force you to fiddle around with them while you are actually DRIVING! Nothing fit the bill so far?

There's hope. A few weeks ago, DLO has introduced its latest in-car iPod dock that comes as close as having a built-in iPod connector as it can get.

The TransDock Deluxe is an updated version of the company's popular TransDock product. The Deluxe version gets you an RF remote that lets you control your iPod from your steering wheel. Clever! The review unit came in just last week and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually like this piece of gadgetry wonder.

DLO HomeDock Music Remote

Image courtesy of DLO Prefer blasting your music through your speakers rather than using your puny earphones? If your music is on the iPod, you might want to have a serious look at DLO HomeDock Music Remote.

The remote was only announced last week and now we got it in our "review lab". It impressed me in many ways. One of them being the bright OLED screen for displaying music on the docked iPod.

Read on to find out more.

AVerTV Hybrid Ultra USB

Just installed Vista? Then you might notice that it now comes with Windows Media Center (WMC). But you can't really get real use out of that unless you have at least a TV tuner. The problem is that there are so many out there and not all of them are Vista-compatible.

Enter AVerTV Hybrid Ultra USB , the first HD/analog TV tuner that is compatible with Windows Vista's Windows Media Center. Not only that, but it also comes with an FM tuner too. Sounds like a perfect package but you never know until you read the whole review.

The first generation of the iriver Clix was no doubt a big success for the company. Its small form factor and gorgeous screen coupled with the revolutionary D-Click navigation method catapulted the device into the limelight and earning it a c|net Editor's Choice title along the way.

Now, iriver is back with its 2nd generation Clix. We'll see if the sequel is in fact better than the original.

Sandisk Sansa Connect

It is finally here. I can hardly believe it. I had been eyeing the Sansa Connect since I first saw it at CES a few months back. I even wrote numerous emails to Sandisk to let me review it but there was no reply. Who can resist the first mp3 player to actually put the Wifi feature to good use; unlike the Zune which uses the Wifi connection as if it was using Bluetooth.

Just got this in only about half an hour ago. I thought that before I review it, maybe I should post some unboxed pictures first. Yes, people love them unboxed pictures. Don't exactly know why but I posted them anyway.

Come back tomorrow for a review. Yes, I have already started on the review process. Might take another day to get the video review done though but I'll post the pictures and the text review tomorrow.

With 7" of screen real estate, Coby PMP7040 Digital Media Player has the one of the biggest displays out there. But the size of display alone does not determine the overall quality of a player. darkchineseboy offers the first look into this monstrous player to see how it stacks up against the others on the market.
