Cowon A3 Unboxed

It's here and it's spectacular! It's here and it's spectacular! As usual, the unboxed photos come first. The review should be done by Friday.

My initial impression of the A3 is very positive. The 4" LCD is sharp (though it is not touch screen), and the size and weight are just right. Some people might be put off that it looks just like the A2, just with a different casing color. However, I really do like this new color though. The menu has been refined; it looks sharper and not as cartoonish as the A2's one. I also like being able to bring up the menu and have the video file still playing in the background. Overall, a nice upgrade to the A2.

Just fyi, the ability to have the menu on screen while the video is playing is a feature of the A2 as well.

technical specs? I'm particularly interested in recording video from an analogue source (composite or s-video)

Peter, that it can do with no problem. For the rest of the specs, you can go to Cowon's web site here.

Luckk, we are waiting so much for your Cowon A3 review...I was on the way to buy an Archos 605 when I've seen the A3 presumably better for audio (my main use) isn't it ?

Thanks in advance for your coming review !

Ed,

When you said that the problems went away when you transcoded the contents of the MKV to MPEG4, did that mean you were able to play 720 content without stutter? If that is the case, could you try an anime 720 divx or xvid encoded avi?

The A3 plays 720p Xvid files without stutter, or at least my unit does smilies/smiley.gif.

That's great, the Cowon A3 can play so many audio files - but who really uses any other format than .mp3? I got mines yeterday. The reception for radio is terrible. (Believe me, i've tried moving around for reception) even with the headphones on! overall the quality of radio failed to fulfill my expectations. Why add this feature if it doesn't work? ... Additionally, Cowon boasts that this device can run .pdf files (e-books) guess what? you have to convert from .pdf to .csd format, and the software they provide (mTrans) is buggy. Overall, im dissatisfied with this purchase, to believe, I sold my iTouch to get this. The Cowon software JetAudio is buggy too. Crashes too often. (be advised im running Vista, perhaps XP works well) ... Either im deaf, or the max volume on this device is insufficient. Sounds too low. in brief -- I can't listen to radio, can't read my eBooks nor convert the files using the specified software, and the max volume is low. On the other hand, I can add just about any video file, record from tv, and record from MIC (useful for college lectures) ... Was it worth to sacrifice the WiFi features on the iTouch for all these other features? It is questionable. I leave the choice to you the reader, buyer, gadgetaholic to decide if this portable media player will fulfill your needs.
